Linen backing is the industry standard of conservation. Canvas is stretchered and a sheet of acid free barrier paper is laid down. The poster is then pasted to the acid free paper using an acid free paste. This process is fully reversible and gives support to the poster. A border of linen is left around the poster and can be used by a framer to mount the poster so that nothing touches the poster itself. Backing is what we recommend for framing, and for any poster needing restoration.

Union Pacific corporate poster encouraging railroad workers and the public to support rail transportation as an essential part of the war effort.
Three military aircraft, tank, field artillery cannon with soldiers and a battleship firing its large naval guns, the "engines of war," are made possible only by railroads transporting troops, weapons, fuel, ammunition, and supplies across the country and to ports.
A large black steam locomotive pulling flatcars loaded with artillery offers a vision of Union Pacific participation.
Please note surface dirt, slight water staining at top right, small edge losses etc. All could be addressed with linen backing.
