The Star Trek TV show went off the air in 1969, with a cult following. There was enough interest built up over the following years that this movie was made in 1979. Three years later, Nicholas Meyer wrote and directed a sequel, "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", which was a giant critical and commercial success, and led to all the many sequels and spin-offs in the years since.
