Fly to the Philippines and the Orient by Clipper Travel Poster

  • ca 1950
  • Mark Von Arenburg
  • 28 x 42 inches ~ (71 x 106 cm)
    $6,500
  • Linen backed

Linen backing is the industry standard of conservation. Canvas is stretchered and a sheet of acid free barrier paper is laid down. The poster is then pasted to the acid free paper using an acid free paste. This process is fully reversible and gives support to the poster. A border of linen is left around the poster and can be used by a framer to mount the poster so that nothing touches the poster itself.

The price of this poster includes linen backing.

  • One of the rarest of  the Pan Am clipper series by Mark Von Arenburg, we can find no record of this poster selling. A Pan Am Clipper soars over a pair of Yaksha statues (nature spirits, deities, or, in some traditions, fierce demons) in front of a Wat (temple) as an ox cart passes by.

Von Arenburg is best-known for his series of vibrant travel posters advertising travel via Clipper with Pan American World Airways. His distinctive style remains consistent throughout his designs for destinations such as Mexico, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Alaska and Europe. "Mark von Arenburg, whose series of at least sixteen posters for Pan Am was displayed in ticket offices around the world, exemplifies the anonymous nature of commercial design. No information seems to be available on this artist who must have been a prolific designer in his time" (Pan Am p. 170).

Please note minor restoration to borders.
