Renowned conceptual artist John Baldessari use of modern graphic techniques reflects his explorative approach to contemporary art and modern media. His poster alludes to the history of the Games by choosing, and juxtaposing, images of modern and ancient runners; athletics being one of the oldest Olympic sports. The emphasis on only the legs of the athletes highlights the aesthetics of speed and movement, some of the most highly regarded Olympic traits involved in its most anticipated events.
This poster is in the National Museum of American History's collection.
Held from July 28th-August 12th, it was the second time Los Angeles had hosted the games, and the first for over 50 years. The games are regarded as one of the most successful of all time, with the USA winning overall and the events turning over $250m in profit. The Olympic Committee of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics commissioned 15 artists to create posters for the event, including David Hockney, Robert Rauschenberg, Jennifer Bartlett, John Baldessari, and Roy Lichtenstein.
We also have other 1984 Olympic Games posters available.
