In 1938 FDR attempted to purge the Senate of those from his own party who had failed to fully support his New Dea projects, in Maryland, the voters rebelled and relected Milard Tydings by a margin of 20% over the Roosevelt backed candidate. See Susan Dunn's book, Roosevelt's Purge.
