Santa Maria - Spaceship 1492 Original New York World's Fair 1964-1965 Poster

  • 1963
  • David Campbell-Taws
  • 63 x 50 inches ~ (160 x 127 cm)
    $850
  • Unbacked

This poster is currently unbacked. At check out, you will be given the opportunity to add backing which would cost $400 and take approximately 6-8 weeks.

Linen backing is the industry standard of conservation. Canvas is stretchered and a sheet of acid free barrier paper is laid down. The poster is then pasted to the acid free paper using an acid free paste. This process is fully reversible and gives support to the poster. A border of linen is left around the poster and can be used by a framer to mount the poster so that nothing touches the poster itself. Backing is what we recommend for framing, and for any poster needing restoration.

  • Great huge poster for the 1964 NY World’s Fair's full-sized replica the Santa Maria, flagship of Christopher Columbus’ fleet moored at the end of a 15th Century-style floating Spanish wharf. Named “Space Ship – 1492,” this recreation was an intercontinental collaboration that insured authenticity. Led by architect José Maria Martínez-Hidalgo, curator of the Maritime Museum of Barcelona, Spain; with Colonel Howard I. Chapelle, Chief of the Naval and Transportation Section of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.

We have never seen this ’64 WF poster before.

Please note foxing, this could be addressed with linen backing.
