One of Christo's iconic projects, The Umbrellas featured 3,100 umbrellas in Ibaraki, Japan (blue) and California, (yellow). The 26 million dollar temporary work of art was entirely financed by the artists through their "The Umbrellas, Joint Project for Japan and U.S.A. Corporation" The artists did not accept sponsorship or governmental funding. Like all previous projects by Christo and Jeanne-Claude The Umbrellas was financed through the sale of the studies, preparatory drawings, collages, scale models, early works, and original lithographs. Following the death of a visitor The Umbrella project was terminated early and installed only from October 9 through October 27, 1991.
Please note significant water damage and tearing to top and bottom left and tape along the back. These issues would be resolved with linen backing.
