The New Typography: Jan Tschichold Original Poster

  • 2010
  • 24 x 36 inches ~ (60 x 91 cm)
    $235
  • Unbacked

This poster is currently unbacked. At check out, you will be given the opportunity to add backing which would cost $145 and take approximately 6-8 weeks.

Linen backing is the industry standard of conservation. Canvas is stretchered and a sheet of acid free barrier paper is laid down. The poster is then pasted to the acid free paper using an acid free paste. This process is fully reversible and gives support to the poster. A border of linen is left around the poster and can be used by a framer to mount the poster so that nothing touches the poster itself. Backing is what we recommend for framing, and for any poster needing restoration.

  • Jan Tschichold - The Modernist Approach and the Asymetrical Page

Great press sheet for the 2009-2010 Museum of Modern Art exhibit, The New Typography.

Tschichiold had converted to Modernist design principles in 1923 after visiting the first Weimar Bauhaus exhibition. He became a leading advocate of Modernist design: first with an influential 1925 magazine supplement; then a 1927 personal exhibition; then with his most noted work Die Neue Typographie. This book was a manifesto of modern design, which he condemned all fonts but sans-serif (called 'Grotesk' in Germany). He also favored non-centered design (e.g., on title pages), and codified many other Modernist design rules.
The aim of typography must not be expression, least of all self-expression, but perfect communication achieved by skill.
