Orient Calls Original Oriental Tourist Conference Travel Poster

  • 1936
  • Munetsugu Satomi
  • 25 x 39 inches ~ (63 x 99 cm)
    $4,850
  • Linen backed

Linen backing is the industry standard of conservation. Canvas is stretchered and a sheet of acid free barrier paper is laid down. The poster is then pasted to the acid free paper using an acid free paste. This process is fully reversible and gives support to the poster. A border of linen is left around the poster and can be used by a framer to mount the poster so that nothing touches the poster itself.

The price of this poster includes linen backing.

  • The first Oriental Tourist Conference was held in Tokyo in 1935. The following year Satomi designed this very rare poster to promote the event using photomontage images of modes of transportation, a map and stylized ethnic figures from across the Orient.

Japanese-born Satomi moved to Paris in 1922, where he studied at the École des Beaux Arts. For a short period of time, he worked as an assistant to A.M. Cassandre in his studio. This experience, combined with his own strong sense of design, helped him gain commissions in both France and Japan.

We also have other posters by Munetsugu Satomi available.
